Four Ways to Wear Bike Shorts
Leggings began to take over the fashion world in the 70s and 80s, gradually becoming an acceptable everyday pant by the 2010s. Through the years, we have witnessed a shift in how leggings are worn, from the 80’s Olivia Newton-John leather legging, to the early 2000’s replacement for tights under dresses (you know, how your mom dressed you in third grade), to the full-on pants alternative we see today. While many of us cherish this comfortable replacement for jeans, a new form of leggings has taken over, perhaps a sister of sorts—bike shorts.
Bike shorts, also known as cycling shorts and legging shorts, are the perfect bottom for the warmer months and should be a staple in your wardrobe. While they do make these in shorter cuts, the longer, high-waisted bike short is the trendiest to wear in 2020 (not to mention, extra length is more comfortable and prevents chafing!). If you are new to the bike shorts world and need some guidance, here are some ideas to help you rock them with confidence!
1. The Athleisure Look
You probably see bike shorts styled most frequently as athleisure; after all, they did evolve from the athletic cycling shorts. This is a great look for running errands and other day to day activities. One way to do this is to pair them with a large sweatshirt or hoodie. This is a look we see many celebrities like the Kardashians, Bella Hadid, and Hailey Bieber wearing. They also look great paired with a t-shirt, a crew neck sweatshirt, a windbreaker, or a sports bra. 2. The Crop Top
While many ladies cringe at the idea of wearing such a figure-hugging bottom with a crop top, it is surprisingly one of the most flattering ways to style bike shorts. If you are opting for the higher-waisted short, find some that hit at your natural waist. A crop top that meets the top of your short, or sits just above your waist, highlights the smallest part of your body, and accentuates your curves. For a bit more coverage, or for a chillier night, try topping this look off with a cropped denim or bomber jacket. If you are a thicker girl, remember that a visible tummy is OK and not a reason to shy away from crop tops, or tight clothing. But of course, if you would feel more comfortable with extra support, try some SPANX biker shorts, like these:

3. The Going Out Look
While it is more difficult to style, bike shorts can certainly be worn for a night out on the town. One way to do this is to wear black bottoms with accessories and a stand-out top. However, to take things up a notch, I would suggest a pair of shorts with a fun pattern or fabric. These would look great with any t-shirt, blouse, or crop top you decide to wear. In the end, you are sure to be more comfortable and have more fun dancing the night away in a pair of shorts than in a short skirt or dress.

4. The Matching Set
Matching sets are one of my favorite trends, because they take little to no effort when styling. If you want to achieve the ultimate matching set look, there are plenty sold separately or together online. Matching bike short sets can be dressed up with jewelry and heels, or down with a sneaker. For a more challenging DIY option, try styling bike shorts with things in your closet of the same color. Monochromatic looks are huge right now, so even try pairing them with a top that is a different shade of the same color! If you are looking to purchase a pre-matched set, check out these options from Forever 21 and Missguided:
